Linksys LRT214. has been around for quite some time but it’s still one of my favorite VPN devices for under $150. Setup can be a bit confusing for the new user, however it’s easy to find many articles and YouTube videos that will help get you up and running in no time. With 4 1Gbe ports, 1 WAN, and 1 DMZ port this small router packs a solid punch. On top of that the router is loaded with features that normally only exist in equipment that costs twice as much. Site to site connectivity via Open VPN or to another device on the remote end of the connection is a snap. There are quite a few times where I need to connect to a piece of equipment from my mobile phone when opening up public side connections or utilizing port forwarding to do the same. Why someone should or should do that is a conversation for another day.
When it comes to the Cisco RV160 this is another VPN router for under $200 that is more than capable. I have to admit that years in the datacenter and architecting public and private clouds Cisco what my go to choice when it came to networking equipment. The SOHO/SMB space is a bit different which makes it easier to stay objective and impartial. Frequent firmware updates is one thing that Cisco offers where updates seem to stalled on the Linksys router which might be related Cisco’s acquisition of linksys. Overall my choice between the two is the Linksys LRT214 hands down.
